William Morris Davis (1850-1934) was an American geographer, geologist, geomorphologist, and meteorologist, often called the "father of American geography." Grove Karl Gilbert, also known as G.K. Gilbert, was an American geologist. In 1871 he joined George M. Wheeler's geographical survey as its first geologist.
